Budget Bytes

let's keep in touch...

I love Facebook - it's still my favorite social media outlet. I like the design and the ways in which it allows users to interact.

BUT...

(there's always a but, isn't there?)

Unfortunately, since they've had to start answering to share holders, Facebook has made some changes that make it difficult for me to stay in touch with all of you. If you've noticed that my posts aren't showing up in your feed, even after adding me to your "favorites" list, you're not alone.

Apparently there is so much fluff and bluff flying around Facebook that they try to filter it all and only show you the important stuff. For instance, you may have 500+ friends, but you may only see posts from about 50 of them. So, "liking" my page isn't enough to make sure you get updates. Watch this video to see how to make sure you get all of my posts.

So, what else can you do?

To make sure you're getting all of my updates and new recipes, I highly suggest subscribing by email. It's free and you'll ONLY receive an email when I make a new post to the blog. In fact, the blog post will be delivered right to your mailbox in it's entirety.

Once you subscribe, make sure to follow the link in the subscription confirmation email to begin receiving updates.

Or, there's Twitter... I'm still learning the ropes there, but all new recipes are posted on Twitter ASAP.

Another great option is Pinterest. There you can browse my recipe collection visually (FUN!) and all new recipes are posted right away. Follow all of my boards to make sure to get all of the recipes, or just follow your favorite category.

If you use an RSS reader, you can also subscribe to the RSS feed.  All new posts will show up, free of charge.

And lastly, I still love to see you all on Facebook. I still post interesting links, recipes, and thoughts, so stop by any time to say hello, ask a question, or join in a discussion. The only difference is that you might have to take the initiative to go there and see what's up instead of it automatically showing up in your feed. :P

So, let's keep in touch!

Update: There may be a way to fix the Facebook problem (although I haven't tested it yet). Check out this video to see how to select specific pages to show in your news feed... and let me know if it works!

Thanks, thistostay, for the info!!

Update #2: Thank you, Christoph, for sending the link to this article, that debunks the myth that Facebook has purposely reduced the number of people that it displays posts to.

Thanks again, Christoph!

Don't forget RSS feeds (I'm using Google Reader)! I see every post through that.

Don't forget Google Reader too, plus you can tag posts with whatever you like.

Yep, I keep in touch through RSS! Much more reliable than Facebook.

Hi, Beth. There is a way for your Facebook fans to continue seeing all of your posts even if you don't pay to promote them. Your fans will need to add your Facebook page to an "Interest List," which is a new feature on the site. Someone made a little video of how to do it: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151224950189260

Have you looked into using Google+? There are some food bloggers on it already. :)

Subscribed via RSS awhile back! In my opinion it's the best way to get updates. :-) Facebook has never been good about showing stuff...even if I add people or liked pages to a list.

    Thistostay - THANK YOU!

Boobookitty - I tried to use it personally, but found it quite cumbersome. I probably won't add any new social media accounts unless they become the next "big thing"... social media is really hard to keep up with as it is!

What about Google Plus? I imagine it would be just as easy as Facebook, but without having to pay.

I have a fix posted on your facebook page. Each user has to do it, but it brings back ALL news from every page or friend you have. If the user sets it up that way. I hope it helps. Let me know if you need more detailed instructions.

Christopher - Thanks for the link!! That does seem to make sense... although some things still make me slightly suspicious. I'll post the link so that everyone can have both sides of the story.

Hi Beth, I follow you on Twitter and Facebook but the best way to keep track of your updates is just to bookmark and check the site once or twice a day :) Thanks for all you do!

FB is losing it's touch and kinda going the way of MySpace. Google Plus is a great alternative. I subscribe to you via Google Reader and haven't had a single problem with it. Keep up the great work!

As far as Facebook what you have to do is tell people to visit your page and click that thing that looks like an asterisk in the right-hand corner, below your cover photo. Click on 'interest lists' and add you to their interest list, then apparently all your posts will show in the news feed. That's what another page I followed 'Shelf Awareness' recommended :) Hope it works for everyone.

I visit your blog about once a week to keep updated. I don't bother with the social media except for distant family and a few personal friends (you know,, the real kind that one chats with over coffee).

You may have to create your Facebook page to be "liked". I liked a comedy page once, and I still always get updates every time they post a new funny picture. You could do something similar, only with your recipe and blog updates obviously.

Just found your blog, my sister sent it to me, and I love it! I'm a chef, and I own a bakery, can't wait to try out some of your recipes on my customers!
I feel your pain about FB, my bakery page is on there. Once I figure out how to make one on Google+, I'll post there too.
HEre's my bakery page, if you are at all interested. Love your stuff!

Sun - No, no... it looks like Blogger's automatic spam filter thought your post was spam for some reason, so they all went into the spam box. I just found them :) You're all good!

I didn't understand the video. I have to have lists? I don't like clicking around and trying to find stuff. I will stick with the email delivery, plus then I can just move you right to recipe file when I want to save something.

Google+! Facebook is becoming more ad-encrusted and less user-friendly with each new day.
