microwave tortilla chips
$0.23 serving

Last night in my quest for a late night snack I stumbled upon something completely magical and I just had to share it with you. I have a feeling that all of the college students out there will especially like this one...

The back story...
I'm the type of person that can't buy chips or crackers because I'll just sit down and eat the entire box or bag at once and then the next morning I'll have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe because nothing will fit anymore. So, I just don't buy them. I save money on the snacks and the new clothes that I don't have to buy as a consequence. Anyway, last night I needed a snack (read: Sriracha and something to serve as the vessel to eat it on) but I had nothing. Usually, I'll make some popcorn for that salty crunch (and dip it in Sriracha) but I was out of vegetable oil and it just doesn't pop the same in olive oil. Then it hit me, I had some whole wheat tortillas! If you bake tortillas, they turn into chips! But, it was late and I didn't feel like heating up the entire oven just to have some chips. Then I remembered seeing online somewhere that you can make potato chips in the microwave. Soooo, I gave it a shot with tortillas. Success!!

Last night, I made these without spray oil and without any seasoning and they were still fantastic. The tortilla stuck to the plate a little so I added the non-stick spray today. The non-stick spray also helps adhere the seasoning. So, if you want it completely fat free, it can be made without oil, just be aware of the sticking issue.

Total Recipe cost: $0.23
Servings Per Recipe: 1
Cost per serving: $0.23
Prep time: 2 min. Cook time: 2-3 min. Total: 5 min.

INGREDIENTS COST
1 lg (10 inch) tortilla $0.18
as needed non-stick spray $0.03
to taste seasoning of your choice $0.02
TOTAL $0.23

I used a tiny bit of salt, chili powder and smoked paprika for seasoning. You can also try garlic powder, curry powder, or even ranch dressing mix.

STEP 1: Lightly spray a large plate with non-stick spray. Place the tortilla on top and give it a light spray as well. Sprinkle on your seasoning.

STEP 2: Microwave on high for one minute. Carefully flip the tortilla (it will be hot) and microwave again for one minute. Carefully flip again (the plate gets SUPER HOT) and microwave in increments of 30 seconds until crispy. NOTE: Sometimes it takes 5-10 seconds after it comes out of the microwave for it to fully crisp because the steam is still evaporating. My first tortilla only took 2.5 minutes, my second tortilla took 3 minutes. Both felt just slightly soft/damp when taking them out of the microwave but got completely crispy after just sitting there a few seconds.

STEP 3: Break the tortilla up and enjoy!

Sometimes the tortillas form a large bubble which will leave you with two super thin layers of "chip." While these are still tasty, they're not quite strong enough to dip into anything.

Step By Step Photos

tortilla chip ingredients
This is what I started with: whole wheat tortillas, salt, chili powder, smoked paprika and non-stick spray.

season tortilla
Lightly spray the plate to prevent the tortilla from sticking. Lightly spray the top of the tortilla and sprinkle with seasonings.

microwave one minute
Microwave on high for one minute. A few bubbles may pop up but that's okay. Flip the tortilla over and then microwave again for one minute. Flip it again and then microwave in increments of 30 seconds until it is mostly crisp.

break up tortilla chip
Let the chip cool just slightly which will allow it to completely crisp. Break it up into pieces and enjoy!

And that's what I had for my midnight snack. Yes, I actually dip them in Sriracha because I love it just that much!

Port of Call!!!!! Now I want a burger and a 'big drink'. Sigh.

Perhaps if you laid them on wax paper or parchment paper they may not stick without the use of non-stick spray? I don't feel good about ingesting silicone, ever since I discovered that was one of the magic ingredient in those sprays... Ignorance is bliss, eh?

Parchment paper is a great idea! Or even a paper towel. Really, the tortilla didn't even stick *that* bad on my original one, I just had to give it a little nudge and it dislodged :) But thanks for the suggestions!!

I love this, I love this, I love this. Did I mention that I love this?

Allison | May 24, 2011 at 9:32 PM

Wow I would have never guessed you could do this. Amazing!

Gonna have to try this. I've been avoiding oven baking some old tortillas in the fridge.

I make popcorn in the microwave with no oil and I think it tastes awesome (I add some butter afterwards sometimes).

1/3c of kernels in a brown paper lunch bag for 2 minutes on high. This is a good amount of time in my micro for no burnt pieces.

Love the sriracha idea!

I do this on parchment paper all the time. You can also make pita chips this way!

Mine got burned extremely bad =[

Beth M | May 26, 2011 at 12:48 PM

Every microwave is different so try just doing 30 seconds at a time until they are just barely "damp" and then let it sit for about 10-15 seconds at room temp to let it crisp up. If it starts to turn brown, don't microwave any further... it will just burn. Hope that helps!!

This is such a great idea, I had to try it. I had to microwave mine for almost four minutes!

Finally, someone who loves Sriracha as much as I do!

Anonymous | July 19, 2011 at 3:28 PM

We grew up eating these in our family, just with a cheese topping instead of the spices. We call them "cheese crisps" - kids love them. If you microwave it for a shorter time, then you can roll it up into a "cheese roll-up." You are right, great for college snacks!

These just blew my mind. I used a corn tortilla (all I had). Sprinkled a little bit of seasoning salt and chili powder on it, and it was fantastic crumbled over a salad. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

I just tried my first microwaved shell. I put in on parchment paper sprayed Pam on one side with cinnamon sugar and did the same on the other side. Microwave set for one minute. Turn on microwave stop at 30 seconds turn over tortilla and turn back on for remaining 30 seconds. Let cool a bit, Yum!

Somewhere I found a recipe that you can make your own tortilla chips by using corn shells.
Plus I found one to make your own wheat thins.

Just made this, it was fantastico! I am sick right now and this was just what i needed. i wanted something like crackers and this takes nearly no effort at all-which is all I have! hahaha. With the chili powder and salt I just used regular paprika not smoked, and corn tortillas not flour. It tastes just like the authentic ones they serve as an appetizer at mexican restaurants!! Just a deliciousful seasoned version :)

Anonymous | July 21, 2012 at 10:42 PM

I will be trying these :) but with Cinnamon and sugar i do believe :)

Anonymous | August 29, 2012 at 8:16 PM

Tried this with cinnamon and sugar. Amazing! Mine just got a little burnt in the middle

Anonymous | April 24, 2013 at 5:54 AM

just tried these. knowing i have a powerful microwave i did 40s each side. ended up setting the smoke alarm off! it was black and gooey in the centre, but the edible bits were fantastic as a quick snack! will defs do shorter increments next time. thanks beth.
