The first thing I ever learned how to make is a tie between homemade macaroni salad and meatballs. My Dad owned a small Italian deli in NY. His mom made all of the salads as well as the meatballs, sausages, etc. I would spend Saturdays in the back helping Gram make the macaroni salad and meatballs. I swear I can make both with my eyes closed. Superb memories abound after reading this contest, Beth. Thank you so much! You're a wonder in the kitchen and inspire so many people who otherwise wouldn't cook to take the plunge and start making meals and memories in the kitchen.

I remember I used to watch a TV show called Mulligan's Stew when I was about 12. They also put out a magazine which happened to have the recipe for the first thing I ever made. It was No-Bake Cookies. You know, the ones with cocoa, peanut butter and oatmeal? So yummy that I'm still making it 34 years later! It also just happened to be the first thing my 12 year old learned to make. Guess we have a little tradition in our house :

My fondest memories of cooking/baking was the many Sundays my mother did all the baking for the week. The whole time my mum was preparing the goodies, I would playing with some pastry she had given me. At the end, I would roll it out and put a little jam in it and have it baked. That jam turnover was never eaten, because it would always be rock hard, with all that handling! My mum would make one for me and pretend it was the one I had made.

Tonight I'll be making pancakes for dinner for Pancake Tuesday (that's how Fat Tuesday is celebrated in England and we've always done the same since we moved over when I was a baby). English pancakes are thin like crepes not fluffy like American ones and are traditionally served with fresh lemon juice and granulated sugar. Yummmm.

What an interesting question. I have thought about this a lot. I learned to cook only 3 things when I lived at home - an omelet, bacon and a grilled cheese sandwich. Why this is interesting is because I can no longer make an omelet, I am vegetarian and I have had to learn to make a grilled cheese sandwich in a skillet as I don't have the "press" that I used in the family home.

Now thirty years later, i still love it as a topping for other desserts or in mini Graham cracker crusts for easy individual apple pies! :) I was blessed with 2 boys who love to cook & together,we enjoy preparing recipes from budget bytes on a regular basis & for that quality time together, I amzeternally grateful! I have no idea what the first thing was I learned to cook- I've been cooking for as long as I can remember. Probably grilled cheese or scrambled eggs- something simple. I DO, however, remember trying to "improve" on my grandma's spaghetti sauce from a very young age. My cousin, brother and I would put whatever we could find in the pot while the sauce was simmering away. I don't know how the woman, did it, but her sauce had NO flavor- no matter what we did to it!

The first thing I learned how to cook were my mother's oatmeal candy cookies, because they require no baking. Then years later I learned instead of letting them dry, you can just eat it out of the pot.
That was a bad discovery for my weight.

The first thing I learned to cook my family called "Ham Doodle." I was five years old. It consisted of a zucchini and a tomato from mom's garden (chopped by mom, of course), sauteed around in a pan with a pat of butter, salt and pepper and a handful of ham (also chopped by mom). I would then use a spoon to "doodle" a bit of salsa on top of the concoction. Sounds strange; but very tasty!

I had so much fun turning the handle and watching the cut pasta come out on the other end. I never took it up when I moved away and got married. Matter of fact, the next time I rolled out down nd made homemade pasta was last year for a friend and his booth at the Italian Festival in Erie, Pa. Still... LOADS of fun!!! =)

I am trying to remember which I learned first. I remember mixing up pancakes from jiffy mix and learning the art of flipping without killing. I remember cooking eggs in the bacon grease. Mom likes the yellow up and dad wanted flipped. But I think the first thing I remember was cooking steak. Grew up with a Jenn Aire indoor grill and sprinkled on seasoning salt and let the grill do the work. Watching to see when to flip and when it was done. Moved out on my own and had no idea how to cook meat without a jenn aire!

Technically.. Hungry man meals were the only thing as a child I was allowed to make.. I lived with my mom, aunt and grandmother AND was an only child.. So instead of having tons of kitchen experience, my grandma was worried I would burn myself (as she did at a very young age).. Second to hungry man meals, thanksgiving dinner was the actual first meal I learned to make. Hey, go big or go home huh.?.. Your blog is awesome and a co-worker and myself found it while looking on Pinterest.. I'm cooking your coconut chicken as I write!

1st thing I learned to cook: An egg! As a kid I loved "juicy eggs"! So my grandmother taught me to take a square of foil, press it around the bottom of a jelly glass, remove and crack an egg into the cup it forms. Sitting it carefully in a pan with just a little water, cover pan and voila! A couple of minutes on med heat and I had my first POACHED EGG!Yum, excuse me,I've got to go poach one right now and soak it up with my Raisin Spice Bread!

I learned to make oatmeal chocolate chip cookies with my grandmother when I was a kid. She also taught me to make spaghetti, and omlettes. Mostly, though, she taught me about making candy and sweets. Every year it was a candy makign extravaganza for Christmas. There would be four different kinds of fudge, cookies, and whatever else struck her fancy. I cook pretty well now, and I cook things my grandmother probably never would have dreamed of (or eaten), but it all started in her kitchen with oatmeal cookies and hot dogs.
