4 WEEKS of GIVEAWAYS
week #3 [CLOSED]

In the continuing celebration of Budget Bytes reaching 10,000 RSS subscribers, I bring you Week #3 of the 4 Weeks of Giveaways!

So, you know I'm obsessed with pizza, right? Well, I am. Pizza is like a blank canvas to which you can apply any flavor, color, or texture. It's pure magic.

But to get a really great pizza, you need a stone pizza oven... or a PIZZA STONE!

So, I'm giving one away. Actually, not just a pizza stone, but also a pizza cutter and pizza peel (the wooden paddle that is used to transfer your raw pizza onto the hot stone). I hope there are many, many delicious pizzas in your future!

Giveaway #3 - Bialetti 4-Piece Pizza Stone Set

This week's contest entry question is:

What is your favorite Christmas cookie?

Since I don't make cookies very often, I decided to turn this giveaway into a Christmas cookie exchange. You can either just name your favorite Christmas cookie or share it with everyone by leaving a link or URL to the recipe. I can't wait to hear your favorites!

HOW TO ENTER:
  1. Leave a comment on this blog post answering "What is your favorite Christmas cookie?" and then click the green "I did this!" button in the contest widget.
  2. "Like" Budget Bytes on Facebook through the contest widget button.
  3. ...or do both!

Good Luck!

The best cookies in the world are pretzel-shaped German cookies my favorite aunt used to make for Christmas every year. She's no longer up to the task, but I'm doing my best to find a recipe so the family can have them anyway.

Spacebeer | November 29, 2011 at 9:14 PM

Pebbernodder - a cardemom flavored danish cookie my grandmother always made.

My mother used to make sugar cookies that were cut out and super detailed. They were even better when frozen then thawed a little. Mmm, I miss home.

Deborah | November 29, 2011 at 9:43 PM

I am a big fan of Mexican Wedding Cakes (aka Russian Teacakes or Snowballs). They were my balls of snow in Southern California!

Rustic nut bars! It's a Taste of Home recipe - shortbread crust topped with toasted pistachios, almonds, cashews and pecans mixed with a caramel glaze and baked. Amazingly yummy (and quite calorific too. ;-)

I love decorated sugar cookies.

Meredy | November 29, 2011 at 11:57 PM

Peppermint candy sugar cookies! They are especially pretty, and extra yummy if drizzled with a little chocolate. I usually make this standard old recipe, but there are any number of variations to 'change it up' if it gets a little same-old-same-old.

I'm really not that into cookies but when the mood strikes, it's Snickerdoodles or bust.

Vicki S | November 30, 2011 at 1:16 AM

I have lots of favorites! :-) But the one that I like best are the Angel Bars from my old Joy of Cooking, tweaked to add chocolate chips to the filling. Gooey, nutty, coconutty, and chocolaty--all the flavors I love....

Patti | November 30, 2011 at 2:06 AM

I love classic sugar cookies with a nice, thick layer of frosting and decorated with sprinkles. I'm eternally a child at heart.

Adriana Valentine | November 30, 2011 at 2:09 AM

Mexican wedding cookies! Only I like to make them with hazelnuts instead of almonds. We gave out tiny boxes filled with the cookies as favors at my wedding, and they were such a hit that by the end of the night people were searching the tables to see if there were any left!

Cassidy | November 30, 2011 at 2:49 AM

i don't really have a favorite christmas cookie! i was always eating peppermint sticks. i suppose i'd have to say gingerbread or ginger snaps. ^^

Ethel | November 30, 2011 at 3:03 AM

Gingersnaps! I think I finished a box in three days once! (Not exactly sure if I should be proud of that...)

Audrie S | November 30, 2011 at 3:05 AM

Favorite Christmas cookie? Chocalate cookie base topped with half a marshmallow cut lengthwise, Baked, then iced over with chocalate icing.

When you bite into the marshmallow section you see that the marshmallow has adhered and pulled to the chocolate icing.

I love Snickerdoodles - I've only had them a few times when my American friend makes them for me, but they're always so good!

Chris Steele | November 30, 2011 at 8:24 AM

I love peanut butter balls--more of a candy than a cookie, but still delicious. And naughty.

Autumn | November 30, 2011 at 8:30 AM

Snickerdoodles. Plain and simple - something about the sugar and cinnamon says "holidays" to me. Although I do love getting out the special Christmas cookie cutters for sugar cookies: the gingerbread man (and woman), the tree, bell, and angel.

Kelci | November 30, 2011 at 8:32 AM

PB with a Hershey's kiss- a classic!

Meg | November 30, 2011 at 8:32 AM

I love PB cookies with a hershey kiss in the middle.

Tamar | November 30, 2011 at 8:33 AM

With so many amazing cookie recipes out there, it was a tough choice...however, Caramel Pecan Bars are sweet bite-sized treats that are a real crowd pleaser! They also freeze well so that you can make them ahead of time! Here's the recipe: www.littletoast.ca/2011/06/caramel-pecan-bars.html

laurel | November 30, 2011 at 8:33 AM

Nutmeg logs mmmmmm :)

SW Knudsen | November 30, 2011 at 8:37 AM

Chocolate Coma Cookies have become a holiday staple at our house since I read the recipe in the back of Diane Mott Davidson's book, "Tough Cookies". (Chocolate and coma in the same recipe? Sign me up!) Though they aren't a traditional holiday cookie, the dried cherries, almonds and chocolate all make me feel warm inside :) (recipe link: http://www.grouprecipes.com/4701/chocolate-coma-cookies.html )

Other than that, I grew up with homemade Vaniliekranser, a butter cookie shaped like a Christmas wreath. I think the best part was that it was a special attachment on my mom's Kitchen Aid that pushed out this long piece of dough that you had to catch and cut quickly to make the shapes, so it became like a game for the kids.

Cari | November 30, 2011 at 8:40 AM

My Favorite cookie is Chocolate Mint Cookies for several reasons. One they are chocolate cookies topped with chocolate Andies Mints, I love cookies with melted chocolate on top! Reason number two is these cookies I have never messed up while trying to bake. (I know it's hard to mess up cookies, but I'm still learning and when I was younger I'd mess them up all the time! Except these.) I got the recipe from my mom, not sure where she got it from.

Sarah | November 30, 2011 at 9:26 AM

Spritz!

Teresa M | November 30, 2011 at 9:31 AM

I forget what they are called... but you put down a sugar roll out cookie base, then put jelly on that and top it with another sugar roll out, however the top layer has a cut out in it (I use mini cookie cutters for that) so you can see the jelly. Does that make any sense?? They are really good, not overly sweet. I think last year I did an almond roll out cookie with strawberry jelly :))

Carina | November 30, 2011 at 9:31 AM

Anything with chocolate!

Liz | November 30, 2011 at 9:32 AM

Torie | November 30, 2011 at 9:50 AM

It's a tie between decorated sugar cookies and gingersnaps.

Job and Rachael | November 30, 2011 at 9:53 AM

Alyssa | November 30, 2011 at 10:06 AM

Oh my gosh. It has to be the Green Christmas Tree cookies! That is Christmas right there for me. My family has been making them as long as I can remember. They have that great almond extract flavor. mmm. http://twoyolks.org/2007/12/18/green-tree-cookies/

Anonymous | November 30, 2011 at 10:08 AM

maybe this isn't really a christmas cookie, but my aunt used to make white chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies only at Christmas- probably because they were expensive!

Keli Keener | November 30, 2011 at 10:08 AM

Hershey kiss drops. Of course.

Ariana McCoy | November 30, 2011 at 10:14 AM

My fav cookie is a fudge roll cookie. It is batter that is rolled flat with fudge and walnuts sprinkled in then rolled up like a cinamon roll and cut into slices to be baked YUM!

Chocolate snow flakes are the best!

Lee | November 30, 2011 at 10:32 AM

Pfeffernüsse cookies, fun to eat, fun to say, and it takes a long time to make so several people can spend time in the kitchen gabbing while it happens. You make a ton of them because they're hard right after they're made, but then they soften and keep their sugar shell. Here's a random recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/pfeffernusse-cookies/detail.aspx

MandaCann | November 30, 2011 at 10:34 AM

Snickerdoodles!

Linda | November 30, 2011 at 10:35 AM

Those little cookies with the citron that my great aunt Dora made always say Christmas to me.

Anonymous | November 30, 2011 at 10:43 AM

My favourite Christmas cookie is Rugaliki. Its a crescent shaped cookie, that is filled with jam or nuts. Here's a basic recipe for it: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/rugelach-2/detail.aspx

I like to fill them with Plum Butter (not jam, as its too watery), or with Nutella and some roasted chopped walnuts. It is truly the best cookie ever!

Alex | November 30, 2011 at 10:50 AM

Sugar cookies!

Shannon Kelly | November 30, 2011 at 10:55 AM

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies are my favorite :)

Chocolate peppermint. Yum.

celina.z | November 30, 2011 at 11:31 AM

My favorite Christmas cookie, hmmm... probably a tie between the traditional sugar cookies and these hazelnut chocolate macarons I made one year. Gotta make those again!

Jennifer N. | November 30, 2011 at 11:35 AM

My favorite are the sour cream cookies that my grandmother used to make. She didn't even need to measure anything out - she knew by looking exactly how much of everything she needed. And of course they always turned out perfectly. The best part is that she was of the age where one didn't need or use a fancy mixer. She did it all with her hands, which I find very inspiring as of late.

epcummings | November 30, 2011 at 11:36 AM

It's a tie: homemade cranberry and oatmeal triple chocolate chip cookies and Trader Joe's Candy Cane Joe-Joes

Chia-Luen | November 30, 2011 at 11:46 AM

I don't really have a favorite X-mas cookie (I have a general love of all cookies!) but I'm imagining something with white chocolate, black chocolate, macademia nuts, and broken pieces of peppermint candy canes... time to experiment!

Charlotte | November 30, 2011 at 11:47 AM

Anything with ginger or cinnamon!

FerStin | November 30, 2011 at 11:50 AM

I really love just plain old chocolate chip cookies. Can't get any better than that.

Andrea Puckett | November 30, 2011 at 11:51 AM

It seems really weird, but those tins or buckets of cookies you can get at the store smack of the Holiday for me with their simple processed butter cookieness and colourful sprinkles and what have you. But home made? No Bake Cookies... always a holiday treat for us. :)

Joe Louthan | November 30, 2011 at 11:55 AM

Snickerdoodles. Simple and simple to make.

Rachel | November 30, 2011 at 11:57 AM

Chocolate Cookie with peanut butter middle!

Leah B. | November 30, 2011 at 12:09 PM

My mama's homemade lemon sugar cookies she got from an elderly family friend when she first got married. The recipe is over a hundred years old and amazing. Every year she says she's not going to make them because they're time consuming and every year we threaten to boycott Christmas.

Melissa | November 30, 2011 at 12:14 PM

Hands down - its got to be sugar cookies decorated by my 5-year old!

mckibs | November 30, 2011 at 12:27 PM

Absolutely no doubt! The cream cheese cookies with sprinkles !!!!

Kelly | November 30, 2011 at 12:27 PM

These are my ultimate favorite Christmas cookie. As soon as December hits, people always start to ask me when I'm going to start making them! The trick is to let the Andies mints sit on top of the cookie for a few minutes as soon as they come out of the oven, and then swirl them around to get the perfect brown/green swirl "frosting"! Also don't forget to check the comments for different variations!

One of my favorite cookies, for Christmas or otherwise, are Italian sesame thins. They are all buttery, sugary goodness that are rolled into balls, coated with sesame seeds and then baked (in ball form), where they flatten out. They are spectacularly good! Sorry, don't have a link.

I don't know what they are called, but I looooove the ones with the single hershey kiss in the middle of a peanutbutter cookie!

Snickerdoodles! I love the sugar cookie and cinnamon combination.

Elisabeth | November 30, 2011 at 1:47 PM

My mother's fudge melt aways! a layer of Semi-sweet chocolate mixed with crushed graham crackers, then a layer of buttercream frosting, and then a thin layer of dark chocolate on the top. Chill in the fridge before adding each layer. To die for!!

Homemade decorated sugar cookies! Mostly because of the time spent with my large family decorating the cookies and sharing stories—accompanied by warm cocoa of course! :)

My absolute favourite Christmas cookies are Venetian Fritole! My mom makes them every year and they're basically like timbit but filled with raisins and the batter is soft and spongy which makes it hard to eat just one. They only come out at Christmas, so I savour each one. We usually make a big batch and bring little portions to all of our friends and family. I'm a sucker for tradition. Here's a link to the recipe http://english.incucina.tv/ricette/2968/2977/3887/ricetta.asp and just don't think about the calories for this one! They're worth it!

sarah | November 30, 2011 at 2:00 PM

Lisa | November 30, 2011 at 2:06 PM

I have two favorites, but the recipes are in cookbooks at home - coconut macaroons and mint chocolate chip meringues.

I always loved chocolate crinkles. Mostly because they turned out so pretty when they baked and my grandma used to make them for me.

My boyfriend's mom makes the most delicious frosted sugar cookies. She is even letting me help her this year! We're making lots of cookies in the shapes of stars, christmas trees, ornaments, it's going to be awesome.

Those cookies with Hersey's Kisses in the middle! Or just sugar cookies...I don't really eat them any other time of the year. Or peanut butter cookies! too many to choose from!

Not quite cookies, but my aunt makes lamingtons (squares of stale cake coated in chocolate and rolled in coconut) that are delicious. Also, peppermint nanaimo bars.
