4 WEEKS of GIVEAWAYS
week #2 [CLOSED]
In the continuing celebration of Budget Bytes reaching 10,000 RSS subscribers, I bring you Week #2 of the 4 Weeks of Giveaways! What do I have for you this week? It's a piece of kitchen equipment that I have absolutely fallen in love with over the past two years - A SLOW COOKER!
Now, I'm not one of those people who likes to cook everything in a slow cooker. In fact, I think most things shouldn't be cooked in one, but there are a few things that it does very, very well. Anytime something requires a long, slow cooking process, the slow cooker is your pal. You can literally "set it and forget it." I love making slow cooked meats, like pulled pork or the infamous taco chicken bowls, but it's also great for beans or slow cooked sauces. Just being able to stock your freezer with freshly cooked beans instead of having to buy canned beans makes this appliance well worth it's weight in gold.
If you haven't started experimenting with a slow cooker yet, I hope this inspires you to!
Giveaway #2 - 6 Quart Crock-Pot Slow Cooker

This week's contest entry question is:
What is your go-to comfort food when you're feeling under the weather?
After having too much fun this past weekend, my throat decided to swell up to the size of a soft ball (or so it felt) and all I want is some Super Ramen Bowls. Or, if I wasn't so exhausted, I'd go get myself a bowl of pho. So, those are my two sickness soother foods, what are yours?

«Oldest ‹Older 1 – 200 of 535 Newer› Newest»My go to is a sausage, kale, onion and potato soup. SO good, reheats well, has that good nourishing broth. :)
the classic: chicken noodle soup
My go-to comfort food is (GF) tomato soup and (GF-brown rice) elbow noodles mmmmm. If I have gluten free bread, then I add grilled cheese sandwich to dip in the soup and that is my ultimate comfort food meal :) With a cup of tea of course!
If I'm stuffy, nothing beats a bowl of homemade Chicken Noodle Soup and a Cup of Tea.
i love the chinese chicken noodle soup my mom used to make me!
Usually soup of some sort - the last two times I've been sick I made creamy mexican chicken soup. Super comforting and cleared out my sinuses. :)
mmmmm, I'd have to say anything involving potatoes- Baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, homefries. Potato soup is the best combination of comfort foods!
Scrambled eggs with feta cheese on toast, with ketchup. Guess what I had for dinner last night!
One of my top comfort foods is stroganoff ( beef, chicken, meatball, or just mushrooms,) with egg noodles.
Either mashed potatoes or potato soup
My go to is buttered toast and sprite when I'm under the weather. Also, chicken noodle with tabasco.
Something hot and soupy like pho! :)
Macaroni and cheese, or pasta with butter, parmesan cheese, and salt and pepper.
My go to is chili! So many different ways to make it and all good!
Definitely pasta with tomato sauce!
For me it would have to be homestyle pho. The rich broth mixed with the hot noodles always warmed me up on a gloomy day.
My homemade chili. I'm not a huge soup person, so chili is my alternative. :)
Grape juice cocktail - I know it's terrible, but that what I always drank when I was a sick kid.
Potato gnocchi is one of my favorites, but I'm a bit embarrassed to admit chicken flavored ramen is one of my sick day favorites. I know it's bad for me, but it sure tastes good then.
-Carmen
Spaghetti! But if that seems like "too much work", my fall back is mashed potatoes. Middle-ground work? fried potato chunks with a runny-yolked fried egg.
My favourite comfort food is a great bacon sandwich, crispy grilled bacon in lightly toasted bread and it must include brown sauce too.
My mom's veggie and potato soup is a must if I'm sick!
Warm cheesy pizza with lots of toppings!
Hot and Sour soup with an egg roll.
Macaroni & cheese the way my mom used to make it...with Velveeta. =)
Homemade pizza with lots of cheese!!! Or potato soup in the crockpot. Love your blog! Thanks.
Classic chicken noodle soup over a bit of rice. I find it hard to stomach much else if I'm sick.
My comfort food when I am feeling under the weather is saltines and ginger ale. Or toasted homemade raisin toast (your recipe) with butter!
Every time I'm not feeling well, I make your Quick Ramen Bowl (http://budgetbytes.blogspot.com/2010/03/quick-ramen-bowl-101-each.html)! It's about all I have the energy to make when I'm not feeling well and all of the added veggies, spice, and protein really helps my immune system to fight off my ailments.
Whenever I'm not feeling well I love having my Mom's turkey meat sauce with spaghetti! I love twirling noodles around my fork--it is so comforting and nostalgic.
My go to foods are toast and tea.
I love homemade chicken soup with noodles. Yum! It warm me up and I feel much better
My go to comfort food is chicken noodle soup. I made some last night!
It's weird, but whenever I'm sick, I'm craving pizza.
Tomato soup with lots of cayenne pepper. Second would be lemongrass chicken & rice from the Vietnamese takeaway :)
My go to comfort food is ice cream or cold cereal. They cure everything!!! :)
Mashed potatoes. That's all I want when I dont feel well. Not sure they make up well in a slow cooker though. LOL
My go-to food when I'm not well is buttered toast, sometimes with Vegemite if I'm feeling up to it (can you tell I'm Aussie?)
Chicken broth with saltines softened in it.
Noodle Kugel, nothing beats warm kugel with cinnamon sprinkled on top.
I always go for soup!
Actually, your coconut chicken soup has become my go-to "under the weather" comfort food. It's like the sick kid's classic fav, chicken soup... but way better. Not trying to butter you up here, I know this is a random winner thing, but seriously I want absolutely nothing else to eat when I'm feeling ill.
What is your go-to comfort food when you're feeling under the weather?
instant mashed potatoes mixed with chicken flavored ramen soup. it looks like a hot starchy mess and tastes great with butter on top!
xxalainaxx
Toast and tea are my go-to comfort foods! Dark, toasty bread, a small pat of butter, and a strong cup of Earl Grey or oolong. Mmmm!
Mine is grilled cheese, especially if I can get someone else to make it for me. My mom made it for me while I was growing up.
I always make garlic soup. It's warm and comforting, but it also helps you feel better.
A nice steaming bowl of potato soup. With cheese! :)
Home made chicken and noodles! Yum!!!
Creamy tomato soup and grilled cheese!
After just getting over a bad cold, I ate my go-to comfort food quite often the past couple of weeks: minestrone soup, piping hot. Some hot tea doesn't hurt either.
Grilled cheese. Yum..

Potato and ham soup! I have an ear ache now...hmmmm...maybe I should make some! :)
When I am under the weather it is chicken noodle soup or pasta with just salt and warm 7up. That was what my Mom always made for us, so it is what makes me remember her caring for me.
My comfort food is buttered eggs. A hard boiled egg, peeled while hot, mashed with a fork with butter and salt and pepper. Makes me feel better almost immediately. My mom made them when I was little...
Leckerli, a swiss cookie made with honey, ground almonds, and candied fruit.
My comfort food is my Mom's clam chowder and some homemade garlic bread. My mom makes THE BEST clam chowder, and my husband requests it every week when it's cold. If I'm feeling sick, though, any good ol' chicken noodle soup will do.

(I always have to post as anonymous, just can't figure this thing out, grrr!)

Grilled cheese and tomato soup. Sometimes I just eat pieces of sliced cheese.
My go to comfort food is definitely miso soup
French onion soup! I use a TON of onions, deglaze the bottom of the pot at least 2-3 times with white wine and/or veggie broth, cook it all over low heat and use that "better than bouillon" paste in lieu of beef broth. Simmer gently over low-medium heat with a bay leaf or two, maybe some fresh thyme, and broil with crusty bread and gruyere on top. Cures what ails ya.
I would say chicken noodle soup but its too cliche for me so I'm gonna go with a huge loaded baked potato (the carb overload puts me right to sleep) and fla-vor-ice freezie pops (they just make me happy no matter what) .
Cream of wheat with butter and brown sugar.
I love to make a chicken soup! Sometimes with rice, sometimes noodles, sometimes dumplin's... always yummy & comforting :)
~Blessed5x~
My favorite food when I'm feeling under the weather are probably granola bars.

I feel like soup always makes me know that I'm not feeling well. So I try and avoid it. I would say my go-to is chili. There's soooo many ways to make it...regular (with cheese and sour cream of course, or chicken taco chili or buffalo chicken chili. Options are endless!!! Hmmm. I feel a cold coming on. :)

My go-to comfort food when I'm not feeling well is milk toast. Srsly.
Toast your bread. I toast mine in the oven. Since I don't regularly have bread in the house, I don't have a toaster.
Heat milk in a saucepan with a good-sized pat of butter. Add salt & pepper to taste.
Put toast in a bowl, pour warm milk mixture over it. Feel better. It works for me. :)
For me, it's always grilled cheese and tomato soup.

My go to under-the-weather-feelin' comfort food is either chicken noodle (homemade of course.) or split pea.... I haven't met a homemade split pea soup I've liked though, unfortunately. Although, that's one I've yet to cook myself. I have to have the thick as mud, shaped like a can, Campbell's Split Pea with Ham. For whatever reason, its the best ever.
P.S. will definitely be trying split pea soup in the slow-cooker if I win....

Chicken Adobo.
I have to have vegetable soup when I'm feeling bad. It reminds me of my Grandmother too, which always makes me happy :)
My go to comfort food is plain yogurt. Persians eat yogurt with everything, and not the sugary fruit kind. Regular, full fat, think, sour yogurt.
Hot homemade tomato soup. I'll get one tomorrow, can't wait!
I know this is silly but brownies are my go to for everything!

Protein, vitamin C, iron, and low fat/carb sources get me back on my feet in no time!
Cauliflower-tomato soup. Creamy, warm, delicious!
A vanilla milk shake or Ramen noodles!
Definitely macaroni and cheese - the kind from the box. It's not original, it's not classy and the jury is still out on whether it can actually be qualified as food. But dammit, it makes me feel like a kid again!

When I have a cold or am recovering from a flu,I want the same exact thing my mom made us when we were sick: Campbell's Chicken & Stars (Chicken Noodle or Chicken & Rice make acceptable substitutes) with toasted white bread or --- if I'm feeling well enough --- a grilled cheese sandwich on the side, with a tall glass of ginger ale loaded with ice.
When I'm grieving or heartsick or just plain downtrodden, I want Indian take-out.
If I'm feeling really sick (and haven't been eating much for a while), I get huge cravings for things like fries, samosas, and spicy or curried dishes—anything with a lot of fat and/or heat. Does it make me feel any better? Absolutely not, but if I'm really sick, I'm usually so hungry that it's totally worth it.
My mom's potato soup! I almost always have the ingredients on hand, and it's easy enough that I've even made it successfully while under the weather. Great giveaway; thanks!

I am a big fan of my homemade veggie soup when I am under the weather, but to save time, I used frozen veggies (whatever is in the freezer) thawed in the microwave, and 2 large cans of whole tomatoes, a bit of olive oil, Veggie stock/broth and I might take the time to chop up a couple stalks of celery and some cabbage, a large turnip or a couple of potatoes. It all depends on whats at hand. Let it go all day on low in the crock pot, and voila...you have yumminess when you want dinner!
My go to food when I'm not feeling well is Potato Soup. My mom used to make it for me, and it still makes me feel better!

I also drink tons of hot water with bourbon, honey and lemon if my throat gets it.
And I swallow one whole raw clove of garlic a day...this literally can cure me.
One of my favorite comfort foods when feeling under the weather is Turkey Barley Soup.
Tomato soup and grilled cheese.
When I feel like I'm getting sick, I always make some sort of chicken broth based soup. Usually with lots of veggies and kale if I have it.
Soup of any kind. It kind of stinks because I hate canned soup, now, and so I have to make sure I keep frozen home-made soup in my freezer so I have what I need when I'm sick!
Homemade mac and cheese!
chili, with extra cheese, crushed tortilla chips, and diced avocado on top. drool.
Homemade soup or scrambled eggs!
plain noodle soup is what I always want. with a cup of tea.

My go-to is cream of rice with sugar, cocoa powder, and cinnamon... but only if my mom is there to make it for me. Now that I don't live near home, I make a really simple veggie soup with matzoh balls or barley.
Grilled cheese and tomato soup cannot be beat.
tomato soup, and cinamon sugar toast. Not eaten together though haha. It's what my mom always gave me when I was growing up and I still love it. These and some good Disney classics are what make me feel better.
I love sausage gravy and biscuits. This was the hardest thing to give up when I became a vegetarian, but I've gotten pretty good at making it with soy "sausage." My secret is adding a few tablespoons of maple syrup which mimics the flavor of actual sausage.
