4 WEEKS of GIVEAWAYS
week #2 [CLOSED]

In the continuing celebration of Budget Bytes reaching 10,000 RSS subscribers, I bring you Week #2 of the 4 Weeks of Giveaways!

What do I have for you this week? It's a piece of kitchen equipment that I have absolutely fallen in love with over the past two years - A SLOW COOKER!

Now, I'm not one of those people who likes to cook everything in a slow cooker. In fact, I think most things shouldn't be cooked in one, but there are a few things that it does very, very well. Anytime something requires a long, slow cooking process, the slow cooker is your pal. You can literally "set it and forget it." I love making slow cooked meats, like pulled pork or the infamous taco chicken bowls, but it's also great for beans or slow cooked sauces. Just being able to stock your freezer with freshly cooked beans instead of having to buy canned beans makes this appliance well worth it's weight in gold.

If you haven't started experimenting with a slow cooker yet, I hope this inspires you to!

Giveaway #2 - 6 Quart Crock-Pot Slow Cooker

This week's contest entry question is:

What is your go-to comfort food when you're feeling under the weather?

After having too much fun this past weekend, my throat decided to swell up to the size of a soft ball (or so it felt) and all I want is some Super Ramen Bowls. Or, if I wasn't so exhausted, I'd go get myself a bowl of pho. So, those are my two sickness soother foods, what are yours?

HOW TO ENTER:
  1. Leave a comment on this blog post answering "What is your go-to comfort food when you're feeling under the weather?" and then click the green "I did this!" button in the contest widget.
  2. "Like" Budget Bytes on Facebook through the contest widget button.
  3. ...or do both!

Good Luck!

My go to is a sausage, kale, onion and potato soup. SO good, reheats well, has that good nourishing broth. :)

melarol | November 22, 2011 at 4:51 PM

the classic: chicken noodle soup

Réanne | November 22, 2011 at 4:52 PM

My go-to comfort food is (GF) tomato soup and (GF-brown rice) elbow noodles mmmmm. If I have gluten free bread, then I add grilled cheese sandwich to dip in the soup and that is my ultimate comfort food meal :) With a cup of tea of course!

M | November 22, 2011 at 4:53 PM

If I'm stuffy, nothing beats a bowl of homemade Chicken Noodle Soup and a Cup of Tea.

charlene | November 22, 2011 at 4:54 PM

i love the chinese chicken noodle soup my mom used to make me!

Krysta | November 22, 2011 at 4:54 PM

Usually soup of some sort - the last two times I've been sick I made creamy mexican chicken soup. Super comforting and cleared out my sinuses. :)

Eli | November 22, 2011 at 4:54 PM

mmmmm, I'd have to say anything involving potatoes- Baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, homefries. Potato soup is the best combination of comfort foods!

kayloulee | November 22, 2011 at 4:54 PM

Scrambled eggs with feta cheese on toast, with ketchup. Guess what I had for dinner last night!

juliamacpherson@yahoo.com | November 22, 2011 at 4:55 PM

One of my top comfort foods is stroganoff ( beef, chicken, meatball, or just mushrooms,) with egg noodles.

herblackwings29 | November 22, 2011 at 4:55 PM

Either mashed potatoes or potato soup

Kara R. | November 22, 2011 at 4:55 PM

My go to is buttered toast and sprite when I'm under the weather. Also, chicken noodle with tabasco.

Carmen | November 22, 2011 at 4:55 PM

Something hot and soupy like pho! :)

Jennifer | November 22, 2011 at 4:56 PM

Macaroni and cheese, or pasta with butter, parmesan cheese, and salt and pepper.

Kristabella | November 22, 2011 at 4:56 PM

My go to is chili! So many different ways to make it and all good!

Julia | November 22, 2011 at 4:57 PM

Definitely pasta with tomato sauce!

Tony | November 22, 2011 at 4:57 PM

For me it would have to be homestyle pho. The rich broth mixed with the hot noodles always warmed me up on a gloomy day.

Tara Sullivan | November 22, 2011 at 4:57 PM

My homemade chili. I'm not a huge soup person, so chili is my alternative. :)

The Hedges | November 22, 2011 at 4:57 PM

Grape juice cocktail - I know it's terrible, but that what I always drank when I was a sick kid.

Anonymous | November 22, 2011 at 4:57 PM

Potato gnocchi is one of my favorites, but I'm a bit embarrassed to admit chicken flavored ramen is one of my sick day favorites. I know it's bad for me, but it sure tastes good then.

Jennifer Bird | November 22, 2011 at 4:57 PM

Spaghetti! But if that seems like "too much work", my fall back is mashed potatoes. Middle-ground work? fried potato chunks with a runny-yolked fried egg.

Lynn | November 22, 2011 at 4:58 PM

My favourite comfort food is a great bacon sandwich, crispy grilled bacon in lightly toasted bread and it must include brown sauce too.

Jessica J | November 22, 2011 at 4:59 PM

My mom's veggie and potato soup is a must if I'm sick!

Jen Rogers | November 22, 2011 at 5:00 PM

Homemade pizza with lots of cheese!!! Or potato soup in the crockpot. Love your blog! Thanks.

Hui | November 22, 2011 at 5:02 PM

Classic chicken noodle soup over a bit of rice. I find it hard to stomach much else if I'm sick.

Jennifer | November 22, 2011 at 5:02 PM

My comfort food when I am feeling under the weather is saltines and ginger ale. Or toasted homemade raisin toast (your recipe) with butter!

Every time I'm not feeling well, I make your Quick Ramen Bowl (http://budgetbytes.blogspot.com/2010/03/quick-ramen-bowl-101-each.html)! It's about all I have the energy to make when I'm not feeling well and all of the added veggies, spice, and protein really helps my immune system to fight off my ailments.

Lauren A. @ Newest Obsession | November 22, 2011 at 5:04 PM

Jeneanne | November 22, 2011 at 5:12 PM

I always go for soup!

looloolooweez | November 22, 2011 at 5:12 PM

Actually, your coconut chicken soup has become my go-to "under the weather" comfort food. It's like the sick kid's classic fav, chicken soup... but way better. Not trying to butter you up here, I know this is a random winner thing, but seriously I want absolutely nothing else to eat when I'm feeling ill.

mrs. miss alaineus | November 22, 2011 at 5:13 PM

What is your go-to comfort food when you're feeling under the weather?

Jen | November 22, 2011 at 5:18 PM

After just getting over a bad cold, I ate my go-to comfort food quite often the past couple of weeks: minestrone soup, piping hot. Some hot tea doesn't hurt either.

When I am under the weather it is chicken noodle soup or pasta with just salt and warm 7up. That was what my Mom always made for us, so it is what makes me remember her caring for me.

famousapril | November 22, 2011 at 5:27 PM

My comfort food is buttered eggs. A hard boiled egg, peeled while hot, mashed with a fork with butter and salt and pepper. Makes me feel better almost immediately. My mom made them when I was little...

Leckerli, a swiss cookie made with honey, ground almonds, and candied fruit.

Sara and Matt | November 22, 2011 at 5:28 PM

My comfort food is my Mom's clam chowder and some homemade garlic bread. My mom makes THE BEST clam chowder, and my husband requests it every week when it's cold. If I'm feeling sick, though, any good ol' chicken noodle soup will do.

Anonymous | November 22, 2011 at 5:29 PM

Hot and sour soup :))

(I always have to post as anonymous, just can't figure this thing out, grrr!)

NotAppealing | November 22, 2011 at 5:29 PM

I make some macaroni or shells, then add a can of tomatoes and some other veggies if they're around. A lot of garlic and a lot more parmesan later, I'm a happy girl.

Sarah | November 22, 2011 at 5:32 PM

positiveregard | November 22, 2011 at 5:33 PM

My go to comfort food is definitely miso soup

Dolly | November 22, 2011 at 5:35 PM

French onion soup! I use a TON of onions, deglaze the bottom of the pot at least 2-3 times with white wine and/or veggie broth, cook it all over low heat and use that "better than bouillon" paste in lieu of beef broth. Simmer gently over low-medium heat with a bay leaf or two, maybe some fresh thyme, and broil with crusty bread and gruyere on top. Cures what ails ya.

Anna | November 22, 2011 at 5:36 PM

I would say chicken noodle soup but its too cliche for me so I'm gonna go with a huge loaded baked potato (the carb overload puts me right to sleep) and fla-vor-ice freezie pops (they just make me happy no matter what) .

TheHandAnswered | November 22, 2011 at 5:36 PM

Cream of wheat with butter and brown sugar.

Anonymous | November 22, 2011 at 5:37 PM

Melissa Mazrim | November 22, 2011 at 5:38 PM

I feel like soup always makes me know that I'm not feeling well. So I try and avoid it. I would say my go-to is chili. There's soooo many ways to make it...regular (with cheese and sour cream of course, or chicken taco chili or buffalo chicken chili. Options are endless!!! Hmmm. I feel a cold coming on. :)

Anonymous | November 22, 2011 at 5:40 PM

My comfort food is definitely beef vegetable soup! It's the best when you're feeling crumby. Pair it with some crusty bread and voila, not too shabby!

Janice in GA | November 22, 2011 at 5:40 PM

My go-to comfort food when I'm not feeling well is milk toast. Srsly.

Toast your bread. I toast mine in the oven. Since I don't regularly have bread in the house, I don't have a toaster.

Heat milk in a saucepan with a good-sized pat of butter. Add salt & pepper to taste.

Put toast in a bowl, pour warm milk mixture over it. Feel better. It works for me. :)

crystal | November 22, 2011 at 5:41 PM

For me, it's always grilled cheese and tomato soup.

Dalia | November 22, 2011 at 5:41 PM

Megan J | November 22, 2011 at 5:54 PM

My go to under-the-weather-feelin' comfort food is either chicken noodle (homemade of course.) or split pea.... I haven't met a homemade split pea soup I've liked though, unfortunately. Although, that's one I've yet to cook myself. I have to have the thick as mud, shaped like a can, Campbell's Split Pea with Ham. For whatever reason, its the best ever.

P.S. will definitely be trying split pea soup in the slow-cooker if I win....

Kimber_froggy | November 22, 2011 at 5:55 PM

Homemade chicken noodle soup with homemade noodles.

Kayla | November 22, 2011 at 5:56 PM

Spicy roasted red pepper and tomato soup. Ze best, and the spice helps clear the sinuses.

Chelsea S. | November 22, 2011 at 6:12 PM

Although I love the traditional bowl of soup when I'm feeling under the weather, my all time favorite comfort food when I'm sick is a hot quinoa bowl of: quinoa, spinach, tomato, cucumber, veggie griller patty, zucchini, and a little cheese. Protein, vitamin C, iron, and low fat/carb sources get me back on my feet in no time!

Carry | November 22, 2011 at 6:12 PM

Cauliflower-tomato soup. Creamy, warm, delicious!

A vanilla milk shake or Ramen noodles!

Jennifer Nobles | November 22, 2011 at 6:14 PM

Definitely macaroni and cheese - the kind from the box. It's not original, it's not classy and the jury is still out on whether it can actually be qualified as food. But dammit, it makes me feel like a kid again!

me | November 22, 2011 at 6:14 PM

mac and cheese!

Rachel W | November 22, 2011 at 6:15 PM

Mac and cheese, chicken and noodles, and/or chocolate pudding - all made from scratch by my mom. All of them feel like a hug in a bowl!

The classic: chicken soup.

Elsa (elsa.macbebekin@gmail.com) | November 22, 2011 at 6:25 PM

When I have a cold or am recovering from a flu,I want the same exact thing my mom made us when we were sick: Campbell's Chicken & Stars (Chicken Noodle or Chicken & Rice make acceptable substitutes) with toasted white bread or --- if I'm feeling well enough --- a grilled cheese sandwich on the side, with a tall glass of ginger ale loaded with ice.

When I'm grieving or heartsick or just plain downtrodden, I want Indian take-out.

Emily | November 22, 2011 at 6:25 PM

If I'm feeling really sick (and haven't been eating much for a while), I get huge cravings for things like fries, samosas, and spicy or curried dishes—anything with a lot of fat and/or heat. Does it make me feel any better? Absolutely not, but if I'm really sick, I'm usually so hungry that it's totally worth it.

TheYellowRose | November 22, 2011 at 6:25 PM

My mom's potato soup! I almost always have the ingredients on hand, and it's easy enough that I've even made it successfully while under the weather. Great giveaway; thanks!

My go-to comfort food is definitely Hot and Sour soup, but in a pinch, any soup will do. The spicier the better!

ThinkingMan | November 22, 2011 at 6:37 PM

I am a big fan of my homemade veggie soup when I am under the weather, but to save time, I used frozen veggies (whatever is in the freezer) thawed in the microwave, and 2 large cans of whole tomatoes, a bit of olive oil, Veggie stock/broth and I might take the time to chop up a couple stalks of celery and some cabbage, a large turnip or a couple of potatoes. It all depends on whats at hand. Let it go all day on low in the crock pot, and voila...you have yumminess when you want dinner!

Whit517 | November 22, 2011 at 6:38 PM

My go to food when I'm not feeling well is Potato Soup. My mom used to make it for me, and it still makes me feel better!

Jesss | November 22, 2011 at 6:39 PM

Chilli. Warms you up and I swear I always feel better after a good homemade chilli.

Kelli | November 22, 2011 at 6:40 PM

Grilled cheese and soup...or chili and cornbread. I guess a carb + anything in a bowl!

Jonah and Aja | November 22, 2011 at 6:42 PM

listeningmom | November 22, 2011 at 6:53 PM

If I'm starting to feel like I might be coming down with something, I always go for homemade chicken noodle soup. I've been told it's the best :) If I have had an emotionally exhausting day and need comfort food, I almost always go for carbs....you know, pizza, macaroni, spaghetti, etc. Those carbs help you sleep really good :)

vtmom9806 | November 22, 2011 at 6:55 PM

Hate to say it but either take out Chinese wonton or egg drop soup :-)

I love to have soup when I am under the weather, sometimes I too make a Super Ramen bowl! Really spicy though.

Kristin | November 22, 2011 at 7:07 PM

Chicken noodle soup! Though I usually just drink the broth.

Andrea | November 22, 2011 at 7:08 PM

Im with Alicia...chicken noodle soup! They don't call it Jewish penicillin for nothing! Lots of garlic, celery, onion carrot and fresh herbs (cilantro helps clear phlegm in lungs, so does garlic and its an immune system builder). And I prefer egg noodles cause I'm a weirdo!

I also drink tons of hot water with bourbon, honey and lemon if my throat gets it.

And I swallow one whole raw clove of garlic a day...this literally can cure me.

SZurfluh | November 22, 2011 at 7:09 PM

One of my favorite comfort foods when feeling under the weather is Turkey Barley Soup.

NaDell | November 22, 2011 at 7:09 PM

Tomato soup and grilled cheese.

Jessica @ Stylish Stealthy and Healthy | November 22, 2011 at 7:13 PM

When I feel like I'm getting sick, I always make some sort of chicken broth based soup. Usually with lots of veggies and kale if I have it.

Lauren {Adventures in Flip Flops} | November 22, 2011 at 7:16 PM

Soup of any kind. It kind of stinks because I hate canned soup, now, and so I have to make sure I keep frozen home-made soup in my freezer so I have what I need when I'm sick!

Jennifer | November 22, 2011 at 7:16 PM

Homemade mac and cheese!

Razzle Dazzle | November 22, 2011 at 7:19 PM

Jax | November 22, 2011 at 7:22 PM

I like a bowl of congee -- just rice porridge with whatever I have that sounds soothing mixed in. Egg's a favorite. So is a pickled plum or some ginger.

Catie | November 22, 2011 at 7:25 PM

Some sort of soup - potato, chicken noodle, dumplings, etc. It's always warm and comforting.

feelings dr | November 22, 2011 at 7:25 PM

I like cilantro soup, it is warm and warms the heart. It is part of the Daniels Diet so it is all healthy and tastes delcious.

Renata | November 22, 2011 at 7:26 PM

Mashed potatoes with feta cheese.

SusieE | November 22, 2011 at 7:27 PM

JB | November 22, 2011 at 7:28 PM

I love pretty much any soup, but my husband's homemade chicken noodle soup (with homemade noodles) really hits the spot!

Esti | November 22, 2011 at 7:29 PM

My go-to is cream of rice with sugar, cocoa powder, and cinnamon... but only if my mom is there to make it for me. Now that I don't live near home, I make a really simple veggie soup with matzoh balls or barley.

Natalie | November 22, 2011 at 7:32 PM

Grilled cheese and tomato soup cannot be beat.

Caitlin | November 22, 2011 at 7:32 PM

tomato soup, and cinamon sugar toast. Not eaten together though haha. It's what my mom always gave me when I was growing up and I still love it. These and some good Disney classics are what make me feel better.

Kelly M | November 22, 2011 at 7:33 PM

I love sausage gravy and biscuits. This was the hardest thing to give up when I became a vegetarian, but I've gotten pretty good at making it with soy "sausage." My secret is adding a few tablespoons of maple syrup which mimics the flavor of actual sausage.
